Ely Centre ONSIDE Project to receive funding from Armed Forces Covenant Trust

Ely Centre’s “Onside Project “receives funding from Armed Forces Covenant Trust

“Onside”, is an innovative project aimed at improving physical and mental well-being within the Veterans Community through a combination of Onside Football Hubs, Educational initiatives including (weight loss, diabetes, cancer, healthy eating, exercise and mental health) and competition through the creation of a Veterans League.

During Phase 1 The Onside Project aims to deliver a number of 8 week programmes for Veterans throughout our target areas. On completion of each training session, each participant will receive dedicated training/awareness on men’s health issues to combat diabetes, obesity and common cancer that impact on men such as prostrate or testicular cancers alongside learning team work, football coaching and the development and creation of their own team branding.

We are aiming to deliver between 8- 10 courses over a 1-year period with a maximum of 15 per course for veterans of all age groups  who are physically able to take up the challenge of football and walking football delivered at 3G pitches in each of our target counties.

Speaking on the Project Mr. Jim Dixon Ely Centre Chairperson stated, “Onside is one project I know that the team have been working on for quite a while and I’m glad this innovative idea has been supported via funding from the Armed Forces Covenant Trust.  I personally am excited by the prospect of this project which through football aims to Increase the physical fitness of veterans, Improve the mental health and resilience of veterans, to provide comradeship, fun and the provision of a safe place to meet all through the attraction and competition which football/soccer naturally brings”

Over the coming weeks the Ely Centre will be recruiting for a new project coordinator to lead this project and at present are sourcing suitable pilot venues/clubs to host our first Veterans Onside Hubs.
